Honey in Quran
The Holy Quran highlights the therapeutic benefits of honey, describing it as a natural remedy for various ailments.
Thy Lord has inspired the Bees to build their hives in hills on trees and in man’s habitations from within their bodies comes a drink of varying colours wherein is healing for mankind, Verily in this is a Sign for those who give thought.

Honey was not only valued for its exquisite taste but also for its health benefits. The Prophet encouraged its consumption as both a healing substance and a source of good luck. Early followers of Islam regarded honey as a talisman for well-being (Bogdanov, 2009).During the time of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), his companions successfully treated various illnesses by following his advice, using simple remedies such as honey, cupping (Hijamah), and cauterization (kayy), which was applied to stop bleeding or prevent infections (Deuraseh, 2006). These practices highlight the integral role honey played in early Islamic medicine.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised to take honey and the Quran for healing. It was narrated from 'Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said
"You should take the two that bring healing: Honey and the Qur’an". Sunan Ibn Majah 3452
In the classical Islamic medical tradition, honey is considered a vital health remedy. Imam Bukhari's Kitab al-Tibb (Book of Medicine) features a chapter titled "al-Dawa’bi al-Asal wa Qawlihi Ta`ala ‘Fihi Shifa li al-Nas" ("Treatment with honey and the statement of Allah: where is healing for men"). One famous Hadith illustrates the power of honey in healing:
A man came to the Prophet and said: ‘My brother has some abdominal trouble.’
The Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) responded:“Let him drink honey.”The man returned after a second visit with the same complaint. The Prophet repeated: “Let him drink honey.”
On the third visit, the Prophet replied again: “Let him drink honey.”
Finally, the man returned and said, “I have done that.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) then declared, “The statement of God is true and the stomach of your brother lies. Let him drink honey.” After following this advice, the man was cured.
This tradition underscores honey's role in balancing bodily fluids and promoting healing. As noted in Umdah al-Qari, honey is believed to open blood vessel obstructions, cleanse the stomach and intestines, and purify the chest and liver. Furthermore, scholars like al-Baghdadi emphasized that honey, rich in sugars and minerals, helps cleanse the veins and stomach, improving blood circulation and delivering more oxygen to vital organs, including the brain (Deuraseh, 2006).
Honey’s revered status in Islamic tradition underscores its therapeutic potential, making it an invaluable part of both ancient and modern health practices.
